Is Your Cat Plump?

It’s quite easy to tell if your cat is overweight or not, just run your hands over his/her ribs. You want to be able to feel the ribs but not be able to see them. Also, look at your cat’s waistline from above. There should be an indent in front of the hips. If you cannot feel your cat’s ribs and there is no defined ‘waistline’, then you should try to help him/her lose some weight, because it’s quite likely they are overweight

WHAT TO FEED YOUR PLUMP KITTY

All dry kibble foods are high in carbohydrates, regardless of brand or type. Think of them as little cookies. Cats are true carnivores and not designed to eat a high carbohydrate diet. High carbohydrate diets increase their chances of being overweight and developing diabetes mellitus, lameness, dermatitis, and urinary diseases.

We recommend you feed canned food that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates.

If your cat refuses to eat canned food and you have to feed dry, then your chance of successful weight loss is much lower. We can help you choose the appropriate dry food for maximum weight loss.

HOW TO FEED

Feed your cat[s] 2 to 3 meals each day. Pick the food bowl up after 20 minutes. Please do not leave dry food out in between meals or all night for them to ‘munch on’. Start with 1 can [170 gm or 6 oz] a day divided into 2 or 3 meals. If your cat is ravenous increase the amount or frequency. If your cat doesn’t eat it all, decrease the amount.

Bring your cat to the clinic to weigh him/her once monthly. This allows us to track your cat’s progress so that we can adjust his/her diet accordingly. Our scales are accurate at very tiny amounts, unlike your bathroom scales at home, so it is worth the effort to bring him/her in for accurate weighing.

DO NOT LEAVE DRY FOOD OUT IN BETWEEN MEALS OR ALL NIGHT FOR THEM TO ‘MUNCH ON’

TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Do NOT dramatically change your cat’s diet overnight. Do it gradually over a couple of weeks. Do NOT “force” a cat to eat something he/she doesn’t like. Some cats will literally starve themselves to death. If your kitty won’t eat a food for more than 1 day it is time to try something else or go back to his/her regular food until you find something he/she will eat. Aim for a 1/2 lb weight loss over a month. You don’t want your cat to lose weight too quickly. If an overweight cat doesn’t eat for more than a couple of days or loses weight to quickly, they can get FATTY LIVER DISEASE which is a very serious liver disease.

Good Luck! We have seen many success stories with this weight loss program.
